War Correspondents' Memorial Arch at Gathland State Park
The famous stone War Correspondents’ Memorial Arch serves as a tribute to army journalists and photographers from the Civil War. It was constructed by American Civil War journalist George Alfred Townsend on the property where he built his home, which had been the site of the September 14, 1862 Battle of South Mountain, three days before the Battle of Antietam. The battle of South Mountain was the first major battle on northern soil. Today Gathland State Park is part of the South Mountain State Battlefield Park.

The National Fallen Firefights Memorial Park and 9/11 Memorial entitled "To Lift a Nation" are located on the campus of the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In likeness of the famous 9/11 photograph of three firefighters raising the American flag on Ground Zero, “To Lift a Nation” features a 40-foot-tall bronze monument that was created to honor the heroic firefighters who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 tragedy.
